Glass Shower Door Options

Frameless Glass Shower Doors

Frameless glass doors are the epitome of modern design. Without a metal frame around the edges, they give your bathroom a minimalist look that allows the space to feel larger and more open. If you’re into the “less is more” vibe, frameless doors are your go-to—they’re unobtrusive, stylish, and make a bold statement in any contemporary bathroom.

Framed Glass Shower Doors

For those who want a bit more structure, framed glass doors offer the perfect mix of strength and style. The frame provides extra durability and support, making them a great option if you’re looking for something that feels a bit more traditional. Plus, you’ve got plenty of choices when it comes to frame finishes—chrome, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze—you can easily match your bathroom’s aesthetic while still getting a sturdy, dependable option.

Semi-frameless Shower Doors

Semi-frameless doors combine the best of both worlds with a thin frame around the edges which provides support without sacrificing that sleek look that makes frameless so desirable. It’s a nice middle ground for those who want a sophisticated style but still want a little extra structure in their shower setup.

Glass Panels for Walk-In Showers

With glass panels, you can create an open, walk-in shower that feels like your own personal spa. These panels can be used to define the shower area while keeping everything else wide open, letting light flood the space. The result is a high-end feel without any barriers that hold back the rest of the bathroom’s design.

Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding glass doors are an additional option that allows for slightly more space conservation in comparison to swinging doors. While this is a similar benefit with glass panel showers, sliding glass still enables a closed-off shower to prevent excessive splashing whereas panels are perpetually open.

Customization Options

The options don’t stop there. You can choose from a variety of glass finishes: clear glass for a crisp, open look, frosted glass for a touch of privacy, or etched designs that add a little personality to the mix.

It’s also worth looking beyond glass. Hardware finishes are just as important in setting the tone. Consider switching up the material of the hardware (handle and hinges). Just like the frame, you can  choose from chrome, brushed nickel, or even bronze.

Glass Shower Design & Installation - FAQs

What thickness of glass is recommended for a shower enclosure?

For framed enclosures, 6mm (1/4″) tempered glass is standard. Frameless and semi-frameless designs typically require 10mm (3/8″) or 12mm (1/2″) glass for structural rigidity without a supporting frame. Thicker glass also reduces flex and provides a more premium feel.

Yes. Building codes in most regions require shower glass to be safety-tempered or laminated. Tempered glass is heat-treated to be 4–5× stronger than standard glass and, if it breaks, shatters into small blunt pebbles rather than sharp shards, significantly reducing injury risk.

A standard frameless shower door or enclosure usually takes 2–4 hours to install once the glass is on-site. Measuring, ordering, and fabricating custom glass adds 1–3 weeks of lead time. Complex multi-panel enclosures or tile work can extend the on-site time to a full day.

Glass enclosures can be anchored to most solid surfaces — tile, stone, drywall, or concrete — but the substrate must be structurally sound and level. Frameless installations require precision-drilled anchor points, so loose, cracked, or very soft tiles may need to be replaced or reinforced first.

In most cases, yes. If the existing frame or channel is still intact and the wall anchors are sound, replacement glass cut to the same dimensions can be dropped in. Frameless installations may require re-drilling if hinge positions change. A professional measurement is recommended before ordering replacement panels.

Swing doors need at least 30″ (76cm) of clear floor space in the direction the door opens so it doesn’t collide with a toilet, vanity, or wall. Sliding or bi-fold doors are recommended when space is tight. Always confirm clearances before ordering to avoid costly remakes.

Only 100% waterproof, mold-resistant bathroom-grade silicone caulk should be used. The caulk typically needs 24–48 hours to fully cure before the shower is used. U-channel and sweep seals along door edges add a secondary barrier.

Yes. Frameless doors are heavier and rely on precision-machined hinges, fixed brackets, and handles rated for the glass weight — often 80–120 lbs. Standard hollow-wall anchors are not adequate. Structural anchors into studs or concrete are required, and hardware is typically stainless steel or brass to resist corrosion.

Many jurisdictions don’t require a permit for a straight replacement, but new enclosure installations — especially those involving structural wall alterations or plumbing changes — may need a building permit. Always check with your local building authority before starting. A licensed installer familiar with local code simplifies the compliance process.
